How to customize Job Search Documents for local markets

Job Search Documents need to be customized for local markets, this includes one’s curriculum vitae also known as a résumé in some countries and cover letter.

Curriculum vitae (CV)

There are a number of templates that can be used to create an effective curriculum vitae. An individual should select something that is a reflection of themselves, but also takes into account the industry in which they want to work. It is important to realize that both the appearance of the CV and the actual content are important.

An attractive CV might make it past the initial review, but without substantive information, a person isn’t likely to reach the interview phase. Research has found that many recruiters spend 6-8 seconds on the initial review of a stack of curricula vitae.

Think about the following:

  • Your name needs to be prominent
  • The top third of document needs to have the most important material
  • Use action verbs
  • Even if two jobs are similar, vary the description of your tasks and responsibilities
  • Do not write complete sentences or use the word ‘I’
  • Avoid duplication of content
  • The amount of personal information such as date of birth, depends on the country
  • Errors are a huge problem

A cover letter

A cover letter helps potential employers to understand how the candidate could be an asset to the organization. The cover letter should focus on the company’s or organization’s needs, not on how the job could benefit the applicant. It isn’t a motivation letter. Every letter should be customized for the position and company/organization.

Think about the following:

  • Attention grabbing
  • To the point, lean towards brevity
  • Connect your talents & skills to the job requirements
  • Use key words – try not to duplicate your CV/résumé

  • Job title included, never assume they know
  • Demonstrate an understanding of industry and/or what they want
  • Focus on what the company requires and why you are the solution
  • Think about how your attitude fits with the company culture
  • Achievements & measurable accomplishments are valuable
  • Find the correct contact person
  • Use standard formatting and fonts
  • Send it in a .pdf format
  • Proofread – ensure there are no errors including, typos, dates and names & titles
  • Avoid using online system to draft letter – they borrow from other online content and are not necessarily a reflection of who you are
